The more it is trodden on, the faster it grows.

Vanessa Bell, Interior with artist's daughter
(1935-1936)
All to day, and yesterday too, I have been labouring under an intense physical excitement, to which I can point to no cause except two days of bright, very keen weather coming after a fog. But as I have felt the very same on dull, muggy days,I don't believe the weather is accountable. I said nothing of it to Ronald, but to-night he told me, apropos of nothing in particular, that he had an attack of the same kind and felt inclined to juggle with the stars. He explains this by his lameness, which prevents his dashing around when he is in good spirits. Some days in March especially, he says, he feels that with his not being able to run and jump the racing of his blood will destroy him. I told him that no matter how I tear about at such times the flame goes on devouring me in an almost painful rapture, and that I believe he gets more out of it than I do because he puts it into his work, whereas in my case it merely exhaust itself and me quite fruitlessly.
